The World Paddle Association (WPA) is proud to announce Candice Appleby and Betsy Risner being voted in and appointed to board of directors. Candice Appleby, two time Hennessey-WPA World champion is arguably the most successful Women’s stand up paddler and Betsy Risner, 2011 Hennessey-WPA 50+ World champion bring years of stand up paddle racing experience and knowledge of business.
“Candice and Betsy not only bring a great wealth of knowledge and experience to the WPA but also the dedication to help grow the sport of stand up paddling”, states Byron Kurt, co-founder of the WPA. “Candice and Betsy will also give the WPA great insight with need’s to best serve and promote Women’s paddling.”
“It is a wonderful honor to be elected to the Board of Directors for the WPA. I look forward to helping with the growth of stand up paddling, especially in the non-coastal areas as well as giving valuable feedback that will provide more focus to women in the sport. With the rapid growth of stand up paddling I welcome the challenges ahead and hope to offer innovative ideas to help further this incredible sport”, states Betsy.
“We are excited to have Candice and Betsy on the BOD and look forward to their input and experience to help take the WPA to the next level”, states Scott Sanchez co-founder of the WPA.
“Being involved with all aspects of water sports since my youth and stand up paddling being the biggest growing sport in the world I will enjoy being part of the movement and giving insight to an organization that is on the forefront of the sport” states Candice. “I’m also really excited to be a part of the WPA to help do positive things for the younger generations of paddlers”, states Candice.
Candice and Betsy will join the current WPA board of director’s Byron Kurt/WPA Co-founder, Scott Sanchez-WPA Co-founder, Jim Terrell-Owner of Quickblade Paddles, Billy Whitford-Executive Director of Newport Aquatic Center, Chuck Patterson-Professional Athlete representative, Dan Van Dyck-Event Director, Dez Blanchfield-Founder of Blast RMS/Australia representative, Gary Wise-Regional Race Director/Master Instructor, Mike Muir-President of Riviera Paddle Surf Co., and Reid Inouye-Founder/Publisher of Stand Up Paddle Magazine.
Candice is a two time WPA World champion, four time BOP champion along with many other surf and paddle titles. Candice grew up in the water living in San Clemente and Hawaii and her family who are all accomplished surfers. Candice also dedicates much of her time with kids and charity events around the country. Betsy, a past WPA World 50+ champion grew up lives in Utah where she got involved in SUP the last several years has enjoyed very good success on water and being in the SUP business with her husband and paddler Bob Risner. Both Candice and Betsy will help evolve the sport of stand of paddling and will make a big impact with the WPA.
