This weekend there were races all over the country, and all over the WORLD! However, two races in particular were counting towards the WPA National Points Rankings and the Salt Life Cup for the 2015 Season.
On the west coast, the famous Hobie Hennessey’s Watermans Challenge went off without a hitch. This race went beyond just having a surf slalom style course and a distance course. It included the Paddle Academy’s Watergrom Challenge, as well as the new WPA Scholastic Championships. The young paddler turnout was incredible. Toby Cracknell and Shae Foudy took the lead for the Elite Races while there were multiple winners for the Varsity and Jr. Varsity boys and girls in the Scholastic series and the kids of the Watergrom’s Challenge. On the east coast, the Soundsurfer Waterman’s Challenge in Connecticut was attended by over 100 paddlers in its 4th year. The 5 mile elite course was an out and back from the beach in Bridgeport. All proceeds went to the Soundsurfer foundation and all of the charities they support. In the men’s division, Terry Kent, took the lead on 14′ while Quintin Chiapperino hammered hard to take 2nd overall on his 12’6.” In the women’s division April Zilg fended off northeast locals to take the win. There were also recreational and kid’s races with great turnouts. Full results are available here.
Thanks to all the paddlers that showed up, participated, had fun, and enjoyed the growth of this sport no matter what event you could make it to!
