Hermosa Beach for 2011 Hennessey’s-WPA World Championships of Paddling

On Sept. 17 the Hermosa Beach Pier in Hermosa Beach, CA will be the site of the 2011 Hennessey’s-WPA World Championships of Paddling. The event will include both SUP and paddleboard divisions and be the first SUP world championship while continuing the Hennessey’s legacy of supporting paddleboarding around the world.

Hennessey’s and the WPA will also host the U.S. Paddle Championships July 9, 2011 in Redondo Beach, CA.  The Hennessey’s-WPA World Championships and U.S. Championships are premier paddling and SUP events, and are supported by the WPA’s U.S. Regional Race Series. The regional races serve as qualifying events for September’s World Championship. Paddleboarders and SUP participants in the Fun Race, however, do not need to qualify.

“We are extremely excited to partner with the World Paddle Association to hold he first official SUP world championship at the home of Hennessey’s in Hermosa Beach,” says Tim Ritter, race director for Hennessey’s Racing. “The change of location was a simple decision: the Los Angeles media market, spectator access, and the Hermosa Beach Pier race venue all in the backyard of Hennessey’s Tavern. The WPA shares our vision is to grow the sport of paddling and take it to the next level.”

Hennessey’s has supported paddleboarding for the past 16 years and included SUP in their events in 2008. “We saw SUP growing and wanted to support the participants and give them a place to compete,” explains Ritter. “It only makes sense to keep growing the participation and continue to support the paddleboarders at the same venue.”

“Our restaurants are about our people,” says Paul Hennessey, founder of Hennessey’s Tavern. “We have consciously shunned trends and gimmicks, and the same thoughts and vision go into our marketing with Hennessey’s Racing and supporting the paddle boarding and SUP. This made our decision to partner with the WPA and their vision a perfect match to keep growing the sport.”

This event is being made possible by the support of Hobie, Bacardi, Standup Paddle Magazine, Ocean Minded, H2O Audio, Bark, The Ocean of Hope (O2H) Campaign, Leroy Grannis, and Watermans Applied Science.
