The Shark Bite Challenge is a weekend of paddling competition featuring six man outrigger canoe races (on Saturday) and SUP, paddleboard, surfksi, and OC 1 & 2 races on Sunday. The event is celebrating it’s 9th year in 2012. The Shark Bite Challenge is a charity race, with 100% of the profits benefiting the Friends of the Island Parks, a citizen support organization that financially supports Honeymoon and, it’s sister island, Caladesi Island, State Parks. The parks are one of the few remaining undeveloped beaches in Pinellas county. Caladesi Island has been awarded “Americas Best Beach” and Honeymoon Island is Florida’s most visited state park. In 2012′s event, the Shark Bite Challenge will also feature more paddling features including SUP lessons, Outrigger steering Clinics, a kayak symposium, and a paddling (SUP and kayak) fishing tournament, making the event a “paddlefest”. In past years, the event has drawn 100 people on each day of the event.
